Google has begun rolling out vertical tabs in Chrome on 7. April 2026, a long-requested layout change that moves the tab strip from the top of the browser window to the side.
How to Active Vertical Tabs in Chrome?
Users can activate it by:
- right-clicking any Chrome window and
- selecting “Show Tabs Vertically“.

Benefits of Chrome Vertical Tabs
The update addresses a real pain point for heavy browser users. Horizontal tabs shrink to near-unreadable widths once the count climbs past a dozen, a daily frustration for researchers, developers, and anyone managing multiple projects at once.
With a vertical layout, full-page titles remain visible regardless of how many tabs are open, and tab groups become significantly easier to navigate.
